Manage your life

Self-management is by far more and different than just “time-management”. By the way: Have you ever really managed to manage time? Time is just passing … you cannot accelerate or slow it down. But you can manage yourself in the for ever floating time.
We suggest to see even this topic in the frame of change management. Changes of processes and structures etc. often force you and your people to change working-/behaviour pattern, which you have been used to for quite some years: Your role is changing. That sounds easy, does it? But be honest to yourself: How difficult has it been for you to e.g. change your eating habits, if that ever was successful?
Changes cause people to become frightened, induce dis-stress. You need to take time to re-think and to plan your working and/or private life anew. What are your roles in life? How important are they for you? What is it what your really want (your needs)? What are your skills? What is your know how? And based on this you can find your new role and/or re-design your “old” role. Needs, skills, know-how on the one side and role on the other side need to fit to avoid unnecessary dis-stress. Life-management can reduce dis-stress.
And you also need to know techniques how to reduce acute dis-stress, how to calm down. This could be essential for your health and survival.
Yes, of course, there are also hundreds of tips how to plan and organize your self.
There is still one more aspect to look at, even a major aspect: Employability. Changes are speeding up. One needs to dis-learn old things, re-learn things, learn new things to keep up with the requirements and expectations. How to make sure that you stay on being employable? Or do you want to rick to fall through the grate?
Roles/areas of life and needs satisfaction
Frederik Vester – still well known as “the father” of stress management (see his book: Phänomen Stress) – proposes a tool for making a life-inventory, which is easy to handle.
See example:

  • List your individual values and/or needs (vertical axis).
  • Then list all your roles (horizontal axis).
  • And then check, if and how much your needs are fulfilled in your roles (+3 to -3).

If you discover that there areas of life, in which your needs are not really satisfied or even violated, you might ask yourself, what and how to change to again have a balance in your life. Take responsibility for your life.
